A Simplified Explanation of Sūrah Al-Masad from Al-Tafsīr Al-Muyassar

Al-Masad

Verse 1

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

[Both] hands of Abū Lahab have come upon loss, [destruction], and wretched misery, his having harmed the Messenger of Allāh, Muḥammad ﷺ; indeed, Abū Lahab’s loss [and destruction have] truly come to pass.

Verse 2

مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ

His wealth and his offspring were not enough [to help him]; they will not be able to keep anything away from him of Allāh’s punishment when it falls upon him.

Verses 3-4

سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ للَهَب

He will enter the Fire of Jahannam, of blazing flames–

وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ

he and his wife, [she] who used to carry thorns to throw them on the Prophet’s ﷺ path in order to cause him harm.

Verse 5

فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ

On her neck is a rope, tightly twisted, [made] of coarse, tough fiber. With it she is raised up in the Fire of Jahannam and then cast down to its lowest [depths].
