The “Self-Help” Delusion

The shaikh, Dr. Muḥammad ibn Ghālib Al-ʿUmarī, may Allāh protect him, said:

A slave [of Allāh] remains lost in the valleys of life, deluded by his intellect and planning and organizational skills, until he finds the path of subservience [to Allāh], after which he finds peace and security; cleans up [his] character and manners; and stands upon the right way. Allāh says:

O mankind, worship your Lord, the One who created you—and those before you—in order to protect yourselves from His wrath and to attain His pleasure. (Al-Baqarah, 21)

He has [thus] commanded [all mankind] to [establish] the basis of [all] that rectifies them, that which will fix their lives, get them taqwá,¹ and give them its results in the Hereafter.

¹protecting oneself from Allāh’s punishment by fulfilling His commands and avoiding what He has prohibited (tr.)
