Studying Sharīʿah Systematically

The shaikh, Dr. Muḥammad ibn Ghālib Al-ʿUmarī, may Allāh protect him, said:

The various, differing pieces of advice about how knowledge of the Sharīʿah should be studied systematically are opinion-based pieces of advice that have come about from individual experiences of trial and error, so a student of knowledge must not think there are some fundamental discrepancies [to be found] among these instructions.

But the foundations of these instructions, after making sure [one’s] intentions are correct, are [to be found in a few] matters, the most important of which are:

  • starting with the essential fundamentals of knowledge before [delving into] its deepest, most advanced areas;
  • checking the accuracy of texts with a highly precise and skilled shaikh;
  • not [allowing different areas] of study to vie against one another, creating conflicts;
  • and [utilizing] good time management to acquire [knowledge].
