A Simplified Explanation of Sūrah Al-Ḥumazah from Al-Tafsīr Al-Muyassar

Al-Ḥumazah
Verse 1
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ ١
A bad [end] and destruction are [in store] for every backbiter of people, every frequent attacker of their character or honor–
Verse 2
الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ ٢
[he] whose concern has been to collect wealth and count it.
Verse 3
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ ٣
He thinks that he has guaranteed for himself, with this wealth that he has collected, permanence in this life and an escape from being held to account [on the Day of Reckoning].
Verse 4
كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنْبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ ٤
The situation is not as he has thought: [by Allāh,] he will be flung into the Fire that crushes everything that is thrown into it.
Verse 5
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ ٥
And what will make you realize, O Messenger, what the reality of [that] Fire is?
Verse 6
نَارُ اللهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ ٦
It is indeed the Fire of Allāh, set alight, blazing intensely….
Verse 7
الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ ٧
…that, due to the severity of its heat, goes right through bodies into the hearts.
Verse 8
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِمْ مُؤْصَدَةٌ ٨
Indeed, it is a closed cover upon them…
Verse 9
فِي عَمَدٍ مُمَدَّدَةٍ ٩
…[they who are bound] in lengthened chains and restraints so that they do not get out of it.
