Are You Blushing?

The shaikh, Dr. ʿAbdullāh Al-Bukhārī, may Allāh protect him, said:

If you see a person looking inhibited, his face blushing, held back from doing something that shouldn’t be done; [if you see him] looking ashamed if something [ever] does come about from him that isn’t proper or good—if that happens and you find this [kind of reaction] from [this] person—then know that he is [someone] with a conscience, [someone who’s made] of good stuff, of pure stock. And the opposite applies for the opposite [type of person].

So if you see a person is slow-witted, shameless, crooked, and foul-mouthed; without a care about anything he might do, unrestrained and uninhibited about doing things that are despicable [or] reprehensible—religiously, rationally, or socially—then know that he’s far from all goodness and that he has no ḥayāʾ [shyness, reservations, or inhibitions] to restrain him, nor any conscience to deter him.
