A Simplified Explanation of Sūrah Al-Ghashiyah from Al-Tafsīr Al-Muyassar

Al-Ghāshiyah
Verse 1
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ
Has it come to you, O Messenger, the narration concerning the Resurrection that will cover Mankind with its terrors?
Verse 2
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ
The faces of the disbelievers on that day will have been subjugated by punishment…
Verse 3
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
…made weary by work, exhausted.
Verse 4
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً
A blazing Fire of extreme heat will afflict them.
Verse 5
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ
They will be made to drink from a spring of water that has reached the limits of heat.
Verse 6
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
The People of the Fire will not have anything to eat other than a thorny plant that clings to the ground, one of the worst, most offensive things to eat;
Verse 7
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ
it neither adds substance to the emaciated body of one who has it, nor relieves his hunger or [provides] what would be enough to live on.
Verse 8
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ
The faces of the believers on the Day of Resurrection are of joy;
Verse 9
لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ
having worked during the [earlier] life of the world in acts of obedience, pleased in the Hereafter;
Verse 10
فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
in a Garden high up in [both] place and status.
Verse 11
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً
They will not hear there a single word devoid [of goodness or benefit].
Verse 12
فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ
In it are streams whose waters gush forth.
Verse 13
فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ
In it are high thrones…
Verse 14
وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ
…goblets made ready for the ones who [will] drink [from them]…
Verse 15
وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ
cushions set in straight lines, each one next to the other…
Verse 16
وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ
and carpets of great number, laid out.
Verse 17
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ
Will not those who deny the truth, those who reject it, look at the camel [and consider]: how was it created, so amazing a creation?
Verse 18
وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ
And at the sky: how was it raised high, such a wondrous elevation?
Verse 19
وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ
At the mountains, how were they set in place, so the Earth, as a result, is stable and remains in place?
Verse 20
وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
And at the Earth, how was it spread out and made amenable?
Verse 21
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
So preach, O Messenger, [to] those who have turned away, with that which you have been sent with to them, and do not feel sad about their turning away; you are only one to preach to them–
Verse 22
لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
it is not upon you to force them upon faith.
Verse 23
إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ
But the one who turns away from the reminder and warning and persists in disbelief…
Verse 24
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ
…Allāh will give him as punishment the severe punishment [that is] in the Fire.
Verse 25
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ
Certainly, to Us is their return after death;
Verse 26
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم
then certainly, after that, their requital is upon Us for that which they had done.
